The Vessel of Kulemak is one of the toughest Abyss encounters in Path of Exile 2. It is more than a simple pinnacle boss: the fight gets harder as you continue, and your choices help shape the reward you take away. For players farming endgame bosses, crafting unique items, or building up resources such as POE 2 Orbs, Kulemak is a fight worth understanding before you spend an invitation.
How to Reach the Vessel of Kulemak
You need Kulemak's Invitation to enter the encounter. The consumable can drop from the Abyssal Commanders Tasgul, Swallower of Light, and Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver in level 79+ maps. Use the invitation at the Well of Souls to enter the Black Cathedral.
Because the invitation is consumed when you enter, preparation matters. Check your damage, defenses, recovery, and map setup before starting. Players who buy POE 2 Orbs for endgame upgrades should treat the invitation as part of the total cost of the attempt rather than something to waste on an unfinished build.
The Lich Choice Changes the Fight
Defeating Kulemak does not have to end the encounter. At the back of the arena, you can choose one of three petrified Liches: Amanamu, Ulaman, or Kurgal. Your choice revives the boss, strengthens the next phase, and adds a Desecrated Modifier from that Lich's pool to the Grip of Kulemak ring.
Each Lich generally pushes the reward in a different direction:
1. Amanamu: defensive modifiers and survivability
2. Ulaman: offensive power and damage-focused effects
3. Kurgal: ailment and damage-over-time options
You can choose the same Lich more than once if you are chasing a particular modifier pool. That makes the encounter partly a boss fight and partly a targeted gamble, which is why some players compare the planning process to shopping for cheap Path of Exile 2 Orbs before a major crafting session.
Why the Later Phases Are Dangerous
Every extra victory raises the stakes. Kulemak becomes more aggressive, the arena gains additional threats, and new hazards can make positioning much harder. Spikes, cold bursts, lingering ground effects, minions, and Abyssal fissures can quickly overwhelm a character that stands still too long.
The fight rewards movement as much as raw damage. Try to avoid getting trapped near arena edges, keep a reliable recovery option ready, and leave dangerous ground immediately. Strong frost resistance is especially helpful, while overcapping it can provide extra protection against resistance reduction.
Take the Finger or Face the Final Form?
After collecting up to three Lich powers, you get a final choice. Take the Finger ends the encounter and lets you keep the developing Grip of Kulemak. Return the Finger summons the full-strength version of the Vessel instead.
Winning that final fight adds a fourth random custom modifier to the ring and can provide additional Abyss rewards. Possible drops include Darkness Enthroned, The Unborn Lich Ravenous Staff, and Tecrod's Revenge, a Lineage Gem. Lich characters can also gain access to the Abyssal Lich sub-Ascendancy, opening new options involving Umbral Souls, offerings, and Abyssal Apparition.
Final Thoughts
The Vessel of Kulemak is one of PoE 2's better examples of risk and reward working together. You can take a solid prize early or keep pushing for a stronger custom item while making the fight increasingly dangerous.
Whether you are preparing a dedicated bossing build, farming Abyss content, or watching the market for POE 2 Orbs for sale, the same rule applies: know when to take the reward and know when your character can handle one more round. The Black Cathedral is unforgiving, but the payoff can be worth it.
